In 1800 the population of Birkenhead stood at 110; its inhabitants looked across the Mersey estuary with astonishment at the ceaseless turmoil that was the great port of Liverpool. Yet within 25 years, an ambitious Scotsman had established a new town and set Birkenhead on a course to rival Liverpool.
