Lecture: David Starkey, History and Things

| Ondaatje Theatre

The World Monuments Fund welcomes Art Fund members to a talk by the inimitable historian Dr David Starkey. He argues that, for too long, history has been dominated by the written word. Written evidence is only one of the myriad survivals of the past: Dr Starkey claims that things – buildings, paintings, weapons, textiles and the landscape itself – are just as important. Taking the example of Henry VIII, who came to the throne 500 years ago, Dr Starkey shows the extraordinary revision that occurs when things are put back into the history of Henry’s reign.
