Private View and Lecture: Brim-full of History - The Vale of York Viking Hoard

In 2007 a father and son metal-detecting team unearthed from farmland outside Harrogate what was to be defined as ‘the most important find of its kind in 150 years’.

The Vale of York Viking Hoard is a rare but incredibly significant collection of artefacts that will enable a deeper understanding of an important, but often misunderstood, period of our country’s history. Yet without a large grant from The Art Fund the hoard may have disappeared from public view altogether.

Dr Gareth Williams, Curator of Early Mediaeval Coinage at the British Museum, is overseeing the restoration of the hoard and will talk about the significance of the discovery. The evening includes a wine reception with canaps and a private view of a selection of the hoard.
