Trip to Northern Italy

Flying from Edinburgh to Venice, and travelling on to stay in Ferrara at the Best Western Astra Hotel, this four day trip gives you the chance to explore the towns of Northern Italy. Based in Ferrara you will spend a day in each of the four towns – Urbino, Ravenna, Padua and Ferrara itself. While the major cities of Italy are well known, there is a wealth of great art and architecture in the smaller towns, which can be viewed in a less frenetic atmosphere.

In Ferrara, visit the Palazzo dei Diamonte which includes the national Picture Gallery, the Palazzo Schifanoia, the summer palace of the Este family, and the Cathedral.

Urbino offers the famous Palazzo Ducale which houses two famous paintings by Piero della Francesca. There will also be time to visit the cathedral and the Birthplace of Raphael.

As a complete contrast in Ravenna you will have a chance to see the spectacular Byzantine mosaics so well preserved when silting of the harbour made Ravenna a backwater as trade and prosperity went elsewhere.

Finally on the last day in Padua visit Giotto’s magnificent frescos in the Scrovegni Chapel and the great basilica of Sant’ Antonio (“Il Santo”).

Travel throughout will be by private coach and lunch is organised each day as well as a welcome dinner on Monday evening and a farewell dinner on the Thursday.

As in previous years members can add some time in Italy at the beginning or end of the trip thus saving on flight costs but all such arrangements are their own responsibility and Heritage Travel (see below) must be informed so that the correct number of seats are booked.
