From Dumfries House to Mount Stuart: The path from Classicism to High Victorian Gothic revival in southwest Scotland

| Various

An exploration of the Adam brothers' legacy in southwest Scotland, concentrating on Dumfries House and Culzean Castle, and further visiting the Isle of Bute for a guided tour of the 3rd Marquess' most lavish creation, his ancestral home Mount Stuart. Starting with the restraint of Adam's Dumfries House, through his late Gothic-tinged Culzean Castle, the tour culminates in the riot of the gothic revival inspired Mount Stuart. This two-night trip is conveniently based in Ayr, once Scotland's foremost port. Ayr retinas an interesting collection of buildings from the medieval period through to the late nineteenth century in addition to a fine shoreline with beautiful views across to the Isle of Arran.
