Boat trip on the Braods to St Benet's Abbey and St Helen's Church, Ranworth

| St Benets Abbey

All aboard for a special excursion by the Mississippi paddle boat, Southern Comfort to visit two landmark buildings of the Norfolk Broads. This Mississippi Paddle Boat has the advantage of a double deck which allows sweeping views of the Broads scenery. Dr Tim Pestell, Keeper of Archaeology at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery and author of the popular new book about St Benet’s will lead us around the haunting Benedictine ruins, so beloved by countless artists over the past 200 years. At Ranworth our guide will be Rev. Nicholas Garrard, Rector of St Helen’s, who will show us the many treasures in the church, including the marvellous screen paintings, believed by Simon Jenkins to be ‘unique in their mobile and developed figures, the faces full of expression’, and the lovely Sarum Antiphoner, written and illustrated on sheepskin by monks of Langley Abbey.

Depart from Horning (off the A1062 between Wroxham and Potter Heigham, post code NR12 8NJ). Park by the Swan Hotel (pay and display). A flunch buffet will be served on board with tea and cakes on the return journey. Stout shoes or wellies for the St Benet’s marshes. Bring your friends. Minimum numbers 50.
