Talk: Cosmos in the Garden

Gardens have traditionally reflected our ideas of nature and our relation to it. Contemporary garden design often seeks to find a new iconography incorporating the latest scientific discoveries as well as an understanding of past landscapes.

Starting with his design of the Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Scotland, architectural writer and designer Charles Jencks discusses some of his more recent work that deals with the ‘units of the universe’, the central importance of black holes, DNA, ultimate particles and the basic metaphor of wave-forms.

Using nature to speculate on the laws of nature can lead to amusing and sensual solutions as well as recurrent patterns, such as undulating shapes of strange attractors. Narrative and meaning are as central to this work as more traditional formal languages.
