Home to the Lygon family and only passing through
descent, this moated manor house is charming. Lygon, having been created Earl
Beauchamp in 1815, gradually extended the house and added fine reception rooms.
Evelyn Waugh stayed there in the 1930s and based his book ‘Brideshead Revisited’
on the house and family. Indeed, Jane Mulvagh’s book, ‘Madresfield: The Real
Brideshead’, tells the story. Feel free to arrive early, but not before 1.45pm,
as access to the gardens is available before the tour of the house.
