Talk: Did the Rococo Garden Really Exist?

Painted garden- or park-like settings are not hard to find in French Rococo paintings. They make the ideal background for galanterie, and the Wallace Collection’s works by François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and AntoineWatteau illustrate this point perfectly. But did the French Rococo garden actually exist?

Using drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry and engraved plans of the period, Louise Leates, freelance lecturer in English and European fine and decorative arts and garden history, explores the question.
