Visit to Aberdeen University

| Aberdeen University

This visit to Aberdeen University will be led by Dr Jane Geddes and starts with a visit to the Kings College chapel. Following lunch at Zeste, Dr Geddes will give an illustrated lecture on The Aberdeen Bestiary. Then take a short walk up the High Street and look at the Town House.

A Bestiary is a collection of short descriptions about all sorts of animals, real and imaginary, birds and even rocks, accompanied by a moralising explanation. Although it deals with the natural world it was never meant to be a scientific text and should not be read as such. Some observations may be quite accurate but they are given the same weight as totally fabulous accounts. The Aberdeen Bestiary is said to be one of the finest in Britain and dates from around 1200.

The old Town House has been restored recently by the University of Aberdeen.
