Talk: Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent at The Art Fund
| The Art Fund
Join us in the studio at Millais House for a display of Eastern carpets and a talk by expert Brian MacDonald. He reveals the history of the ancient craft of rug making from its beginnings in central Asia to migrations into Persia, the Caucasus, Anatolia and Afghanistan, where nomadic tribes developed a tradition of creating woven rugs, carpets and dowry bags. The lecture illustrates the wonderful free expression of the art of the weaver prior to the 20th century, and the subsequent degeneration of design due to the demands of commercialism. Brian MacDonald has been a lecturer on Eastern carpets since 1986. In 1990, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for his work with Persian tribes.
