This collection began with 18th- and 19th- century portraits of people associated with Baring Brothers (established 1762), and includes works by notable artists such as Sir Thomas Lawrence, John Linnell, Samuel Palmer and Thomas Shotter Boys. Since the 1980s the focus has been on modern British painting, and works by LS Lowry, John Nash, Harold Gilman and Stanley Spencer have been acquired.
