Private Tour: Victoria Gallery & Museum, Liverpool
Liverpool University's newly restored iconic Victoria Building has now opened in its new guise as the Victoria Gallery and Museum.
Following a hard-hat tour in October 2007 Art Fund members are now being given an opportunity of another private tour with Matthew Clough, the curator, but this time seeing the culmination of all the restoration work.
There will be plenty of time to see the two special exhibitions: 'Liverpool Through the Lens: photographs by Edward Chambre Hardman' which captures the architecture, people and maritime history of Liverpool through the 20th century, and 'Stuart Sutcliffe retrospective', paintings by the 5th Beatle, who showed an early artistic ability, gaining entry to the Liverpool School of Art aged 16. There he met John Lennon who was recruiting a bass player for his band.
In addition, there are early English watercolours, ceramics, fine art, silver and furniture on display. The magnificent Tate Hall on the second floor, houses many of the University's museum collections, which are fascinating.
There is an excellent café where coffee and lunch can be purchased before or after the event - this is not included in the ticket price.
