'Discovering Nature; Russian Landscape into Art'
| University of Wales, Bangor
The Annual T Rowland Hughes Lecture
A Lecture by Professor Alexei Leporc
Curator of Western European Art, State Hermitage Museum St Petersburg.
The lecture will present the evolution of landscape painting in Russian art in the 19th and 20th century, one of the most exciting chapters in the development of Russian art.
The art of landscape painting in Russia is in itself rather young, starting first in the mid 18th century mainly as classical italianate landscapes. But by the mid 19th century a close circle of rich clients was supporting work by Russian provincial masters who caught the essence of Russia's native landscape. For a long time this art was neglected, existing independently from major European art of the time, resulting in some of the most exciting social landscapes created in Russia.
