Study Visit: John Addis Gallery of Islamic Art

The Romantic movement in 19th century Europe encouraged a taste for exotic ornament, stimulated by travellers to the Near East. As works of Islamic art began to enter European collections, they provided the direct models for European craftsmen.

Curators Venetia Porter and Bet McLeod will examine this relationship through visits to the British Museum's John Addis Gallery of Islamic Art as well as to the European galleries to look in detail at the Islamic art prototypes and the European works that were inspired by them. There will be an opportunity to handle some ceramic and metal objects of the types discussed.
