A Day On Clocks

Lecture: 18th Century Clocks and their contribution to Navigation and to Art.

Sir Arnold Wolfendale will explore this fascinating subject in a morning lecture. Sir Arnold was Astronomer Royal from 1991-1995. he is a Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company and President of the Antiquarian and Horological Society. During his career he has held academic posts at the universities of Manchester, Durham, Ceylon and Hong Kong and was head of department at Durham University where he now remains as emeritus professor. Recently he was much involved with placing a memorial to Harrison in Westminster Cathedral. After lunch there will be an opportunity to look at and hear about, the aesthetic styles of clock case design represented in the Bowes Museum Collection.
