Lecture: Istanbul, the Oriental Metropolis of Europe

A capital of empires at the meeting point of continents and seas, Istanbul has been a world metropolis for two millennia, successfully balancing Asia and Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, Christianity and Islam, with their varied peoples and cultures.

In this lecture, archaeologist George Manginis will explore the confluence of ideas and styles from East and West, past and present, manifested in the eclectic yet distinct architecture of medieval and early modern Istanbul, stressing the historical and social context of the monuments.
