'The Challenge of the New' An Evening Lecture by David Barrie

| Burchatts Farm Barn

David Barrie, Director of The Art Fund, will be deliberating the thorny issues surrounding contemporary art. Are today’s contemporary artists really more outrageous than previous generations? A look back in time reveals that ‘great’ artists whose work now adorns the walls of our national art institutions – JMW Turner, Whistler, Picasso, Millais – all provoked widespread shock and even anger during their careers. Does this mean that if we don’t start collecting the work produced by today’s international contemporary artists, will we regret it tomorrow? Are we missing out on the Turners and Picassos of the 21st century?

David Barrie’s lecture comes just weeks after The Art Fund announced the most significant and ambitious scheme in its history - investment in a groundbreaking new initiative devoted to international contemporary art. 5 million has been committed to the scheme, called ‘Art Fund International’, which aims to ensure more contemporary art being produced across the globe today ends up in public collections in the regions of the UK..

Whether or not you agree that today’s artists are the leading lights of a new, exciting era of modern art, this talk promises a fascinating insight into a colourful and often controversial world.
