The collection's origins lie in the 18th- and
19th-century portraits of people associated with the firm of Baring Brothers
(established in 1762). Artists represented include Thomas Shotter Boys, Thomas
Lawrence, John Linnell and Samuel Palmer. Since the 1980s the focus has been on
modern British painting, including examples by Harold Gilman, LS Lowry, John
Nash and Stanley Spencer. There will be a tour with the curator.
