Pallant House and The Cathedral, Chichester

Pallant House has one of the finest collections of Britisha Art in the counrty, a display featured in the new extension recently opened. We shall see the current exhibition Poets in the Landcape: The Romantic Spirit in British Art. This explores the work of the 18th and 19th century Romantics and their influnece on modern artists suchs as John Craxton, Ceri Richards and Graham Sutherland. After walking to the Cathedral, a one-course lunch will be served in the Vicars' Hall. This will be followed by guided group visits to the Cathedral itself to learn its history and to see not only modern commissions such as the magnificent stained glass by John Piper buy many early treasures. The important and moving Saxon sculpture panels will be a particular revelation. Because the centre of Chichester is closed to traffic, members bust be prepared for a short walk to and from Pallant House.
