Faces Fame and Flattery

| St James

In this lavishly illustrated talk, Robert Cumming explores the art of portraiture and asks a number of questions: for example, if you could choose any artist in history to paint your portrait, who would you choose? What would you want - a warts and all likeness, or flattery, or fame? What turns 'face painting' into a memorable work of art? Why did the Mona Lisa change the art of portraiture?

The talk embraces the unquestioned greats such as Gainsborough, Raphael and Jacques Louis David and asks questions about modern portraiture including David Hockney and John Bellany's controversial portrait of the Master of Trinity Hall.
