The collection includes European Old Masters and British paintings, with works by Gainsborough, Zoffany, Sickert and Sir Peter Blake.

The upper gallery displays a select choice of works from the collection. These include an Adoration of the Magi from the 1480s, Silence by Howard Hodgkin and Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of Sir Thomas Rumbold and his son William. The latter reflects Bath's history as a centre for portrait painting in the late 18th century, when many of the wealthy visitors who came to the city to enjoy the spa also sat for a picture.

Also represented are a number of artists who worked at Bath Academy of Art in the 1950s and 1960s, such as teachers Gillian Ayres and Robyn Denny.

Elsewhere in the gallery there are over 1000 pieces of decorative art, including coloured glass perfume bottles and drinking glasses, decorated porcelain, rare lithographic stones and unusual Delftware. Cabinets in the ground floor small gallery contain works on paper, such as prints and watercolours of Bath produced by JMW Turner and Thomas Malton.
