The Munnings Art Museum
Essex, CO7 6AZ
A museum devoted to Sir Alfred Munnings, East Anglian artist and former President of the Royal Academy.
Set in the artist’s former home and studio, the museum holds a comprehensive collection of Munnings’ work. Widely known for his paintings of horses and of horse-racing, he also produced idyllic rural scenes where people worked the land with horses.
Additionally the museum displays a range of original furniture and personal items belonging to Munnings and his wife Violet.
Chronological displays chart the artist’s life and career: from his childhood at Mendham Mill in Suffolk, through his training at Norwich School of Art and as a commercial illustrator’s apprentice, and the equestrian painting for which he is best known.
Two further galleries, are used to host special exhibitions of Munnings' work, including rarely seen examples of his sketching and sculpture.
