Located in the heart of Chichester, Pallant House Gallery is a unique combination of a Grade 1 Listed Queen Anne townhouse and an award-winning contemporary extension, housing one of the UK's most significant collections of modern British art.
Pallant House Gallery was established as a public art gallery in 1982, and reopened in its present form in July 2006. The new wing, attached to the original townhouse of 1712, took nearly three years to complete, and quadrupled the gallery space.
In addition to its permanent collection, the gallery stages a rolling programme of first-class exhibitions of national, international and contemporary art. Some recent shows have focused on the work of R.B. Kitaj, Pauline Boty and Stanley Spencer.
The core art collection at Pallant House was largely formed by the generosity of several individual collectors who left their cherished works to the gallery. One of them was the architect Professor Colin St John Wilson, whose collection of around 400 works was given through the Art Fund and is housed in the new extension he designed.
The displays of modern British art start in the late 19th century with Sickert and his contemporaries, and move through the decades to the present day, covering artists such as Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Eduardo Paolozzi and Peter Blake along the way. The gallery is also home to one of the leading regional collections of European modern art, with works by Picasso, Klee, Severini and Derain being particular highlights.
