Berkshire, RG1 5EX

The museum reopened in October 2016 after an extensive redevelopment project.

Museum of English Rural Life

Following a long tradition of academic excellence in agriculture, Reading University established the Museum of Rural Life in 1951. It began accumulating material relating to the great social and technological changes taking place in the countryside at the time, as the transition was made from horse power to the tractor.

The newly developed museum shifts the focus of its displays from agricultural machinery, tools and implements to the stories of the people who used them. On show for the first time will be examples of crafts and textiles.

The museum is home to the most comprehensive national collection of objects, books and archives documenting the history of food, farming and the countryside.
