Designed by architect Andrzej Blonski, the gallery opened in October 1999 together with Milton Keynes Theatre.

Known initially as MK G, the first exhibition by Gilbert & George attracted over 23,000 visitors and it has gone on to present a broad range of exhibitions by UK and international artists, largely in the form of solo shows.

In addition to onsite exhibitions in the main building, MK Gallery has also commissioned artists to make temporary work for different locations in and around Milton Keynes.

This has included The Open University, thecentre:mk, Campbell Park, Stowe School, and the car park of Stadium MK, the home of MK Dons football team.

The building exterior has also altered over the years, its initial terracotta and sandstone coloured render was replaced with a commission by Michael Craig Martin in 2004 and the facade has been redesigned by several other artists since, including Richard Woods and Gilberto Zorio.

As well as the changing programme of exhibitions, the gallery also hosts family workshops, Friday film nights, live music and performance events. See the website for more details.
