Home to the Earl and Countess of Harewood, this superb Robert Adam palace houses Old Master paintings, family portraits and modern art.
“Harewood is a place of dazzlement, a St Petersburg palace on a Yorkshire ridge.”
Harewood presents an engaging blend of old and new. The Robert Adam interiors, updated by Charles Barry in 1843 under the watchful eye of Lady Louisa Harewood, house an outstanding Old Master collection in addition to more recent work. The period furnishings, including several Adam-Chippendale masterpieces, sit alongside bold modern touches, including a giant Epstein sculpture of Adam in the entrance hall.
The house has enjoyed a special relationship with contemporary artists throughout its history, hanging work by artists including JMW Turner, John Varley, John Piper and photographer Roger Fenton.
Drawing on these rich historic associations as inspiration, Harewood continues this tradition today with a programme of temporary exhibitions, talks, workshops and courses throughout the year.
The Gallery at Harewood, which overlooks the terrace and the Capability Brown-landscaped grounds, contains one of the best privately owned Old Master collections in the country, including works by Bellini, Cima, Titian, Veronese and El Greco.
