Discover the stars of the future in this internationally renowned exhibition, showcasing the best of the year’s fine arts graduates.
The annual New Contemporaries touring exhibition offers unique insight into each new generation of artists to come through UK art schools. Open to all current and recent graduates, and employing a rigorous selection process, the show has become internationally recognised as a measure of the best work to emerge each year.
New Contemporaries has been promoting the new and unknown of the art world since 1949, providing an early platform for many artists who went on to define their eras. Its list of alumni is peppered with familiar names from every period, from Frank Auerbach’s post-war figurativism to the pop art of David Hockney and a host of Young British Artists such as Damien Hirst and Gillian Wearing.
Selections are made by a guest panel of influential figures who might be artists, curators or writers. This year’s selectors are all artists and include a Turner Prize winner (Elizabeth Price) and Turner Prize nominee (George Shaw). Work is considered within a broad cultural context and several selections from among the 47 graduates promise to directly reflect the shifting global political situation.
Proudly independent of place, this is the first year the tour launches from BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and BALTIC’s Project Space at BALTIC 39.
