Past meets future in this unique exhibition showcasing a giant of contemporary art in the historic setting of Blenheim Palace.

Jenny Holzer, New Corner, 2011 (detail)

As the birthplace of Winston Churchill, a keen painter himself and vocal proponent of the necessity for both innovation and tradition in art, it seems fitting that Blenheim Palace should host a leading contemporary artist whose themes include conflict and power.

Jenny Holzer is the fourth artist to take Blenheim’s Baroque splendour as her starting point in a show that engages with and interrogates the palace’s history and traditions; an exploration, in her own words, of ‘the complex past and its relevance to this knife-edge present.’

After nearly four decades of experimenting with art in public places, from early poster displays in New York to more recent light projections, Holzer is well versed in using architecture and landscape as the context for her work. The palace grounds will be transformed and illuminated by large-scale light shows in a series of night-time events, and her much-loved LED signs are displayed within the main exhibition. Always using writing as her medium, Holzer presents a number of new works for the first time – including the use of augmented reality – alongside well-known pieces such as her famous stone engravings.

Putting innovation at the heart of displaying fine art, the Blenheim Art Foundation offers a unique setting for an exhibition that promises to challenge, surprise and delight; a marriage of past and present that would surely have impressed the palace’s most famous son.
