Capture the Castle: British Artists and the Castle from Turner to Le Brun

Southampton City Art Gallery

26 May – 2 September 2017

A showcase of the finest historical and contemporary paintings of British castles.

Sebastian Pether, Moonlight Scene, Southampton

From Iron Age forts to breathtaking medieval ruins to the fairytale follies of the Victorians, castles have captured the imagination of artists for centuries. In the first ever large-scale exhibition dedicated to British castles, Southampton City Art Gallery has brought together paintings from all over the country, including both famous and lesser-known works.

The aura of romance, mystery and intrigue surrounding these relics of the past particularly attracted the Romantics. Works on display by Turner, Girtin, Ibbetson and Sandby, among many others, show how large a part castles played in the Romantic imagination.

Britain’s rich history continues to fascinate and inspire. Over 25 contemporary artists are also represented in the exhibition, including Christopher Le Brun, Alan Rankle, Norman Ackroyd, Alan Lee and David Gentleman.
