Jerwood/FVU Awards 2017: Neither One Thing or Another

Jerwood Visual Arts

22 March – 14 May 2017

An exhibition of newly commissioned moving-image art by Patrick Hough and Lawrence Lek.

Geomancer, Lawrence Lek, 2017

Responding to the theme Neither One Thing or Another, artists Patrick Hough and Lawrence Lek have created two films which explore ideas surrounding the artificial and the real.

Hough’s video And If In A Thousand Years, shot on location in the Southern California desert, captures a world of deserted film sets and decaying Hollywood glamour inspired by Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 film The Ten Commandments.

Looking to the future, Lawrence Lek’s Geomancer makes use of computer-generated cityscapes and artificial intelligence to imagine the relationship between humans, machines and what the role of the artist will be in the future.
