Out of Chaos
15 Oct 2016 – 26 Feb 2017
To celebrate the recent centenary of the Ben Uri organisation, highlights of its émigré art collection are touring the UK.
Ben Uri was founded in Whitechapel’s ghetto in 1915 and is the oldest Jewish cultural organisation in the UK. Over the past 100 years its collection has grown to include 1,300 pieces but – due to space constraints at its current home in St John's Wood – much of it has had to stay in storage.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see many of its most impressive highlights displayed together. Works by the likes of Jacob Epstein, Frank Auerbach, Marc Chagall and Chaïm Soutine account for the difficulties faced by émigré communities, including the journeys they were forced to take as a result of upheavals in their homeland and their struggles with identity and acceptance in their new countries.
An absorbing film by Edwin Mingard – specially commissioned for the exhibition – confronts the issues facing contemporary migrant workers in London.
