Drawing on new research by guest curator Jane Levi, this illuminating show explores how changes in eating regimes impacted the children staying at the hospital from 1740 to 1950.
The food choices made by the hospital were dictated by more than just questions of economy, nutrition and health; interviews with historians, scientists and cultural practitioners reveal the connections between what the foundlings ate and the beliefs that underpinned these decisions. It also highlights the subsequent physiological and psychological effects.
On display is a range of archival material, paintings and objects – including tableware from the Foundling Museum collection – as well as voice recordings from former pupils' in which they recount their memories of the food they were served.
A newly commissioned audio work features sounds that were common to the hospital's dining rooms, allowing visitors to relive the experience of what it was like to eat there.
