Rose Wylie: Tilt The Horizontal Into A Slant

Created from memory, the artist's childlike paintings capture her thoughts and recollections.

In 2010 Wylie's work appeared in an exhibition of 'Women to Watch'; she was 76 years old at the time. Despite graduating from art school in 1956, she initially gave up painting to raise her family. Her first retrospective came aged 78, followed by a show at Tate Britain at 79. She won the John Moores Painting Prize when she was 80 and was elected as a Royal Academician just last year, at 81. It's fair to say her return to the art world has been triumphant.

Much like her career trajectory, her methods are unconventional. Wylie works on unprimed, unstretched canvases, sketching out trains of thought as they occur. She is inspired by experiences from her everyday life, as well as what she has seen in films, television programmes and newspapers. As a result her paintings have a natural and spontaneous quality, providing insight into her inner and outer world.

Don't miss

Wylie has submitted work to the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition every year since 1992. Last year her Herr Rehlinger In White Armour was awarded the accolade for ‘most distinguished work’, and it is now shown here in Cardiff.
