Treasures of the Fan Museum

The museum celebrates its 25th anniversary with an exhibitions of highlights from its collection.

Handpicked by the museum's curators, the fans on display in this celebratory show demonstrate the rich holdings of the site in Greenwich. Drawn from across the world, English examples illustrating scenes of Ranelagh Gardens and Covent Garden piazza are shown alongside Chinese ceremonial fans richly carved from lacquer and sprinkled gold designs from Japan.

These are joined by highly-decorated examples painted with mythological subjects, elaborate rococo confections and feather fans made from the plumes of ostriches and birds of paradise.

Don't miss

Contemporary fan making is represented through the work of Sylvain Le Guen, whose designs capture the imagination of modern-day practice.
