Gathered Leaves: Photographs by Alec Soth

The acclaimed documentary photographer presents four key series depicting life in the USA.

Alec Soth elucidates the American fascination with the open road, travelling huge distances to create contemporary portraits of the country’s diverse landscape and population through moments of tender interaction and vibrant celebration, often in seemingly unremarkable settings.

Despite being a widely celebrated documentary photographer at home and abroad Soth has rarely exhibited in the UK, and uses his first major show at Media Space to present four projects from throughout the last decade: Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagra (2006), Broken Manual (2010) and his highly-acclaimed series Songbook.

These new black-and-white images are the result of over two years’ work taken throughout a series of road trips across seven states, accompanied by the writer Brad Zeller. The pair posed as newspaper reporters in order to gain access to hundreds of festivals, meetings, local gatherings and dances. The resulting collection comprises candid depictions of a cross-section of communities, from exuberant cheerleaders to fervent superstore shoppers.

Soth also uses this exhibition as an opportunity to examine the ‘complex relationship between the book and the wall’, presenting his photographs as prints in the traditional gallery content, as well as through the considered narrative of many of his self-published editions.
