Ladybird by Design
10 July – 27 September 2015
A display of more than 120 original illustrations from the archives of the iconic literary brand.
The series began in 1914 when Wills & Hepworth published its first range of children's books, each bearing the ladybird logo. In the 100 years since, the brand has earned a special place in British culture, capturing readers' imaginations with its unique combination of compelling design and great writing.
Artwork has always been key to the series; illustrations are full-page and full-colour, commissioned from the likes of Charles Tunnicliffe, Martin Aitchison and Robert Ayton. This nostalgic exhibition features images from many of the most beloved series – including People At Work, Shopping With Mother, Science, Nature, Well Loved Tales and Key Words – as well as rare photographs and letters of correspondence.
