For this immersive exhibition, six sound artists were asked to select a painting from the collection and compose a new piece in response.
Among those participating in the project are an Oscar-winning composer, an electro remix DJ and a leading recorder of wildlife and factual sounds. The paintings they have selected range from Renaissance classics such as Hans Holbein the Younger's The Ambassadors to Paul Cézanne's modern masterpiece, Bathers.
Each of the artworks is presented in a sound proof booth with the artist's audio composition – which can only be heard within the National Gallery for the duration of the show.
Soundscapes have been created by Nico Muhly, Susan Philipsz, Gabriel Yared, Jamie xx, Chris Watson, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.
