David Mabb: Announcer

Mabb explores the shared utopian ideals of William Morris and Russian artist El Lissitzy.

Mabb has spent 15 years appropriating William Morris' designs, interweaving them with textiles, graphic and paintings by a range of other artists to highlight the influence of his practice.

For this series, he chooses to unite designs Morris produced for editions of Kelmscott Chaucer with graphics Lissitsky’s supplied for For the Voice – a revolutionary collection of poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky that was considered one of the finest achievements in Russian avant-garde bookmaking. What Mabb aims to emphasise, is that both men wanted to change people's lives through their art.
