25 April – 21 June 2015
Previously shown in Chicago and New York, a display of the American artist's 'sociophotographic' work makes its final stop in London.
Christopher Williams doesn’t like to be pigeon-holed; he describes himself as a ‘photographer, picture editor, film director and graphic designer’. In this – the artist’s first retrospective at the age of 58 – more than 100 prints are used to chart his distinctive multidisciplinary approach.
Williams’ work riffs on commercial, industrial and instructional photography, recalling Cold War era imagery, 1960s advertising and the world of cinema. Included in the display are his renowned 1989 studies of botanical specimens – Angola to Vietnam – as well as his hyper-real, colour saturated studies of kitchenware made in 2014.
