Open for Business

The story of the contemporary British manufacturing industry is told through the lens of nine documentary photographers.

In 2013 magnum photographers visited 100 workplaces across the UK, from one-man businesses to FTSE 100 companies. The pictures they shot provide a behind-the-scenes account of British industry in practice, focusing on the work, activities and lives of the employees.

The project also emphasises the struggles facing businesses today – such as attempts to cut costs, streamline processes and level up to international competition – as well as manufacturing’s effect on regional culture and community life.

Contributing photographers are Jonas Bendiksen, Stuart Franklin, Bruce Gilden, David Hurn, Peter Marlow, Martin Parr, Mark Power, Chris Steele-Perkins and Alessandra Sanguinetti.

Don't miss

Bristol based photographer Martin Parr has captured some of the most innovative businesses in the city. These include Cameron Balloons’ – the largest manufacture of hot air balloons in the world for over 40 years – BAE Systems and Aardman Animations.
