20 March 2015 – 2 January 2017
Rare antiquities on loan from museums across the UK and Denmark are used to unlock the secrets of the Viking world.
The exhibition delves into Viking beliefs and rituals, as well as their raiding, trading, navigation and seamanship as Cnut’s empire of the sea.
Local association with the Vikings is a key aspect of the display; not only did the Norse warriors ally themselves with the Cornish against West Saxon expansion, Cornwall became an important stop-off point on their sailing route from Scandinavia to Scotland, Ireland and France.
Housed inside the exhibition is a Viking boatyard complete with full-scale replica vessels, weapons and tools.
