Modern Art in Britain: Reality Questioned
17 January – 31 August 2015
Part of the Modern Art in Britain programme running across museums in Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Cheltenham, this exhibition focuses specifically on notions of reality in the 20th century.
Paintings from Bristol's 20th century British collection are joined with key works from Swindon Museum & Art Gallery in order to reveal the ways in which modern artists challenged and redefined reality.
Featured are the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, David Bomberg and Eric Ravilious – a generation of artists that set out to forge a new style for a new age. No longer content with imitating external reality, their work experimented with primitivism, illusion, visual puns and abstraction.
