Visions of Beauty

Fans on display question impressions of beauty and desirability

The pursuit of beauty is by no means a modern phenomenon; from mythological goddesses to society belles, the fans on display reveal the quest for aesthetic perfection has preoccupied women since the mid 17th century.

As well as reflecting on changing notions of beauty, the exhibition explores the spaces where it is ‘constructed’ – usually the toilette or boudoir – and where it is ‘performed’; arenas such as Fête galantes, court balls and the opera or theatre.
