Enduring War: Grief, Grit and Humour
19 June – 12 October 2014
Examining how people coped with life during the war, through posters, poetry, art, books and pamphlets from the period.
Letters from Indian soldiers on the Western Front, schoolboys' descriptions of Zeppelin raids over London and the black humour expressed in trench journals provide insight into individual reactions to the conflict. Meanwhile propaganda and other material consider attempts to boost morale both at home and in the field.
The exhibition also highlights the library's involvement in the Europeana Collections 1914-1918, which bring together original wartime documents, films and stories from 20 countries across Europe. The British Library has contributed 10,000 items from its own collections to the site.
