The work of American Abstract Expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler, is shown alongside paintings by JMW Turner from the 19th century.
Despite being an important voice in the development of Abstract Expressionism, Helen Frankenthaler's last public gallery display was at the Whitechapel in 1969.
This exhibition, devised and curated by Turner scholar James Hamilton, aims to give credence to the idea that although Frankenthaler worked on a different continent in a different century, her work shares fundamental qualities with JMW Turner. Specifically, it will explore the similarities that exist in their use of paint and colour, form and narrative, and in their understanding of landscape.
Included are 12 oils and 21 watercolours by JMW Turner, making it the largest collection of paintings by the artist to go on display at Turner Contemporary since 2012.
