Hatch, Match, Dispatch (Part II)
11 January – 1 June 2014
A display of fans which commemorate births, marriages and deaths over the past 300 years.
Beginning in the mid 17th century, the fans on display have been used to record celebratory occasions of national significance such as Royal births and weddings, but also those of a darker nature too.
Lavishly crafted examples given as part of a bride's wedding trousseau are shown alongside modest commemorative confections that were produced in quantity and designed appeal to the masses, all of which are underpinned by a subtle undercurrent of dynastic and political intrigue.
