Tuesday, 8 October 2013
Capturing the golden years of Hollywood and the West End stage through the caricatures of Robert Stewart Sherriffs.
During the 1920 and 30s, R. S. Sherriffs captured the stars of stage and screen as caricatures for magazine such as Radio Times, London Calling and The Sketch.
From portraits of Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin to ensemble drawings featuring Laurence Olivier and Vivien Lee, his highly stylised illustrations used bold texture and pattern to portray the glamour of the era.
The display features Sherriffs' graphic incarnations of Buster Keaton, Shirley Temple, Bette Davis, Gracie Fields, Cary Grant, John Gielgud and Ivor Novello, among others.
