Ursula Burke: Hope For A Better Past
30 August – 13 October 2013
Free to all
Burke's porcelain sculpture and embroidery are inspired by the complex cultural landscape of Belfast since the Belfast Agreement.
The flag protest, protagonists with conflicting interests and common culture are are key themes in this provocative exhibition of Burke's work.
Concerned with issues of representation and identity in contemporary Ireland, her sculptures in particular are layered with historical references, combining elements of the surreal with the dark and humorous.
The artist subverts the artistic conventions usually associated with mediums such as porcelain or embroidery by using them to reference socio-political concerns.
To coincide with the exhibition, MAC has commissioned a limited edition porcelain sculpture by the artist. The work, titled The Protagonist, is individually cast, hand painted and gilded and is the second piece in the limited MAC Artist Edition.
