BALTIC welcomes painter and sculptor Thomas Scheibitz, one of Germany's most popular contemporary artists.
Scheibitz has clearly been keeping busy. This exhibition only covers the last five years of his career, yet there's a rather impressive 200 works on display.
This includes a range of painting, sculpture and drawing, as well as other works on paper, and a specially commissioned piece for the Gateshead venue.
Throughout the exhibition, Scheibitz draws on motifs and themes from everyday popular culture as well as art historical imagery from Renaissance paintings or Medieval engravings.
Interestingly Scheibitz is also inspired by found materials, such as photos, drawings, newspaper clippings, memos, book pages and objects and uses them as a basis for the forms and structures of his paintings and sculptures.
An archive of the source materials and models is shown alongside the display.
What the critics say
"There are not many living artists whose every new work you would always want to see, but so it is with Thomas Scheibitz, whose work is gorgeous, original, exquisitely made and highly intelligent: a chain of stars in perfect alignment."
"Scheibitz likes to paint in a sort of secret code, or with a plan only he knows."
